Pumper
Looking at a cost effective replacement for their aging pumper, the Winter Fire Department turned to Midwest Fire for the second time. This pumper will compliment the tanker-pumper that was purchased in 2021. Specifically laid out to be cost effective and maximize compartment space while keeping the hosebed as low as possible.
Winter FD covers 306 sq mi out of one station in the village — the Village of Winter, the Town of Ojibwa, and all 279.5 sq mi of the Town of Winter, the largest township by area in Wisconsin. Year-round population is under 1,600, but the Flambeau River State Forest, the Tuscobia State Trail, and deer season put a lot more people in the district , and Hwy 70 runs straight through the middle of the village. Members carry hazmat tech, coldwater, confined space, and extrication training, and the department runs a tracked Kubota UTV with the county Search and Rescue team.
The village is hydranted. Everything outside it is draft — dry hydrants at the Lake Winter, Connors Lake, and Fishtrap Lake landings plus a bridge pull-off halfway out to Connors Lake — so a rural structure fire is a tanker shuttle from the first-due on. The department pulls mutual aid almost entirely inside Sawyer County through a strong county fire association.
